Through her research, she learned that "Color Film was Built for White People" (a short video of her study can be found on YouTube). During Kodak’s earliest developments of color film, the chemical elements necessary for accurately depicting darker skin tones were neglected. For example, if you took a photo of white kids on the beach, the image would turn out properly exposed with accurate color quality. However, if you took that same photo with subjects of darker skin tones, the tonality in their skin as well as the intricate details of their unique identities melded together into one overarching shade of black. This poor color quality can also be noticed in early episodes of well-known television series such as The Cosby Show, and Oprah. Color film was eventually reengineered in the early 90's, and its chemical components were revisited. Interestingly enough, the sources that inspired Kodak to revisit this process were quite unlikely. Wood companies were complaining that their darker grains of wood were indiscernible from each other in their marketing imagery. Around the same time, chocolate companies were making the same complaints regarding the advertising of their products. These are the types of complaints that encouraged Kodak to make some adjustments to their film, not the complaints that were coming from the black community and other individuals of color who were being misrepresent by the products.
